LOVING GOD & LOVING OTHERS
HISTORY
Jesus Christ is The Same Yesterday and Today and Forever.
In July 1909, Josiah Akindayomi was born in Nigeria. He was born into a family of idol worshippers but yearned to know the true God. He joined the Church Missionary Society and the Cherubim and Seraphim church but still felt spiritually unfulfilled. In 1931, he began to hear a voice saying, “You will be my servant.” After seven years of ignoring the voice, Akindayomi finally yielded and asked for signs to confirm God’s call. He was given the Bible passages of Jeremiah 1:4-10, Isaiah 41:10-13 and Romans 8:29-31. Akindayomi married in 1941 and continued to worship with the Cherubim and Seraphim church. However, he became concerned that the church was departing from the true Word of God. In 1952, Akindayomi started a house fellowship called the Glory of God Fellowship. The fellowship grew rapidly and in 1957, Akindayomi had a vision of words that appeared to be written on a blackboard. The words were “The Redeemed Christian Church of God.”
God told Akindayomi that this church would go to the ends of the earth and that when the Lord Jesus Christ appeared in glory, He would meet the church. He also established a covenant with Pa Akindayomi, saying that He would meet all the needs of the church in an awesome way if only members would serve Him faithfully and be obedient to His Word. The Redeemed Christian Church of God was born in 1952 and continued to meet at 9 Willoughby Street until they were able to acquire some land. The church relocated to its current location at 1-5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. In the early 70s, God told Akindayomi about his successor. A young university lecturer named Enoch Adejare Adeboye was ordained a pastor of the church in 1975 and became Pa Akindayomi’s successor. Since 1981, the Redeemed Christian Church of God has experienced rapid growth. It is now present in over 150 countries around the world.
